Yes, but. If you do not register it, and someone starts using it without your permission, you can't sue for damages until it is registered with the Library of Congress. Protect you work. Good luck with your career.

No. You have to write it down and apply for a copyright. It is illogical to assume otherwise. What if two people write down the same tune about the same time? Which one gets the copyright if it is not written down and registered?
6 :
Yes, it is. "In all countries where the Berne Convention standards apply, copyright is automatic, and need not be obtained through official registration with any government office." Edit for RememberTheUtah: "Copyright law recognizes the right of an author based on whether the work actually is an original creation, rather than based on whether it is unique; two authors may own copyright on two substantially identical works, if it is determined that the duplication was coincidental, and neither was copied from the other."

noo.

Yes, if it your original work and you have put it down in writing. However, it is better to copyright it to protect it. It's an easy process and not very expensive. It would be hard to prove and enforce otherwise.

It is. Not many people realize it but a creative work is automatically copyrighted at the moment of creation. Go to copyright.gov and they will explain this. The only problem with this is if you don't register it then someone could steal it and how would you prove it was yours originally?

Songbyrd, Halfword, and Libraryanna's answers are all correct. Songbyrd's is the most correct and complete..you should take his advice. The people who said "no" clearly know nothing about copyright law, and really should not be talking out of their *ss like that.
