If you intend to live in the US, your spouse will sponsor you as an immediate relative. Initially, you would receive an immigrant visa. After five years you could then apply to be a citizen if you so desired. http://www.visajourney.com/content/i130guide1

Read through this here: http://www.uscis.gov/USCIS/Resources/A1en.pdf to start with. Your spouse has to sponsor you for a CR-1 visa, so this is probably the most helpful: http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/types/types_2991.html You most certainly need a visa unless you just want to visit for up to 90 days...

Your spouse can file an I-130 to Chicago-USCIS. After about 4-5 months the USCIS (granted everything in the marriage looks bonafide) will issue an approval. After approval your file will go to National Benefits Center who begins the process at your consulate (Sydney) to gather any remaining documents and schedule an interview. The whole time process usually takes between 4-6 months before you will enter as a Conditional Permanent Resident. (if your marriage is less than 2 years at time of approval abroad you will have conditional residency and must apply to remove these conditions 90 days before the expiration of your 2 year green card).
