Its a big country so you need to narrow it down. NYC, Chicago, and California are very expensive. Small towns, the south and middle of the country can be many times cheaper.

I'am in the same position too, (I live in the United Kingdom & I want to live in the United States) I have been doing research for a while now and I basically have the same answers as the other people have answered, it does depend were you live like New York and like Chiago and especially California would be expensive, whereas Orlando wouldn't be as expensive. I also found that if you're not a United States citesen you have to get (pay) for some United States of America VISA (part of some VISA waiver programe), which allows you to work and live in the United States. The cheapest way is to move in with somebody And your best bet is to search for an apartment To share, I found reasonable living quarters in Dearborn, Michigan last year through Craig lest I believe it was and there were others, it depends To where you want to live in the states, the rent Varies from state to state and also the city you want To live and make sure you get one with the use of The kitchen and if you want to rent a car you can Rent one for as low as $13.00 a day but you have to Rent it through your computer, you can do every thing From home and it's cheaper, good luck.

Like the others said, it depends on where you live. Most foreigners visit the big cities on either coast and fall in love, but those cities are the most expensive places to live. It's much, much cheaper to live in the middle of the country, or in the south, excluding Florida.
