How do people that live in America get by without speaking English

How do people that live in America get by without speaking English?
Yesterday, I was in Walgreen's and a little girl was talking to me in another language and I asked her mom what she was saying. She said, "no English". I went to check out and a lipstick I wanted rolled off the counter where the cashier was. I asked her if she would get it for me and she didn't understand. She only seemed to know how to ring people up and that's it. If they are living here, how can they get by without learning our language?

Because there's a huge spanish speaking population and English isn't our official language. Every package has translations etc. It can be done and it looks like it is.

by expecting people to go out of their way to figure out what they are saying. i'm all for people coming here to make a better life for themselves and their family (legally of course) but they should at least attempt to learn. most americans wouldn't go to a foreign country like spain or france or whatever and not at least get a book or something to have some idea of what we are saying...

that is a good question? what a shame that they don't have none English speaking Italians so I can learn that language but I think that if they come here to live they should make the effort to learn English

People do it all the time here in cali.. It doesn't bother me any...

Because it would be 'racist' to demand that immigrants learn English (particularly non white immigrants). It's even considered racist to demand that they come here legally. And our government insists on catering to them rather than having them assimilate. I'm sure someone's going to say that we don't have an official language, which is true. But the majority of citizens do speak English. And it does take a common language for people to get along in any society.

if you don't speak English get the hell outta here :)

In case you didn't know, 11 years from now White Americans will be the minority, Latinos will be the majority. Thank God, maybe I'll come back to the U.S. then! How does it feel to be the odd one out huh?? That's how we've felt most of our lives!!!!

Because our government allows them to. It's fuked up. Our government thinks that we should be learning their language. Why the fuck should I? If they want to come here, then they can learn fucking English. Go to any other country, there is no "press 2 for spanish". I wish they would stop coming here. Stay in the mainland; They may become the majority, but they will never be in control. Most of us don't want all of the US to be in the sh*t state that California is now. Look what they have done to that place. Now what does that say about your people?

I am flabbergasted at this sweeping phenomenon everyday. Its like I couldn't imagine living in Paris and not speaking French-its just much more difficult than it has to be.

Obviously it's difficult, but they're managing. For example, the cashier is earning a living and she's not stooping to pick up things you drop. What's your point? If she spoke English she'd have hustled to pick up that lipstick for Blondie?
