i know our population is 300 million in america- but i have no idea about the parts of the population that are children and elderly people???

It depends on your definition of elderly and children. Broadly speaking, there are roughly 41 million citizens whose ages range from under a year to 19 years old and 16 million citizens whose ages range from 60-80 years old.
