For every country including the USA, you need to at least apply for a visa from that country before you can visit or stay there. A passport is a travel document issued by your own country that lets you return after traveling to another country and on which visas from foreign countries are stamped. Even if you're from a country with visa waiver program, you could not live in America or any other countries for a couple of years continuously because usually a visitor is allowed to stay for 3-6 months only for every visit. You could apply for extension of stay later but you would need a good reason. Foreign visitors are not allowed to work in any countries. If you are planning to stay in the US for a couple of years, the best way for you is to apply for a student visa, you could then be allowed to work within the college. The other option is to find an US employer who can sponsor you for a work visa. As for the tests the first poster refers to, it only applies to US permanent residents applying to become a citizen. In order to become a permanent resident, you either have to have a family member who is already a US citizen who can sponsor you, or get a work visa first. You could be eligible to become a permanent resident after working for 5 years. The fastest way to become a permanent resident is to marry a US citizen.
