How come alot of Hispanics dont learn English while they live in America

How come alot of Hispanics dont learn English while they live in America?
im not say ALL. cuz i know many who do. but why do alot of them dont know how to speak english? even being here a couple of years. im sorry my parents are immigrants also and came and learned English. they get all these translations which i think takes away their need to learn the language. i think if you make immigrants feel they NEED to learn the language, they will. what do you think?

Because they'd rather have us learn Spanish. GO HOME!!!

I think they should learn English. In that way, they will become part of the country, instead of staying separate. I also think you should learn English, too.

well for one thing its alot harder to master any language after a certain time,im not saying its impossible, just really hard. also alot of the ones who dont learn the language dont have the time,if your working 12+ hrs aday it makes it rather hard to have time.

Because they are lazy racist to don't give a crap about America, English, our "de facto" nation language, or our laws. They are Mexican through and through and only here for freebies and money. PERIOD.

It is a lack of respect for the U.S. I feel there should be a test and if you can't pass that than you don't need to come in. You have to take a test to drive a car and other things but there is no test for coming to the U.S. thats crazy

No big need for them to learn English since US has pretty much gone by lingual.

It takes time, but there are racist organization that makes them feel that it is perfectly acceptable not to learn English. They even go to our school system and demand that we dumb down our education system so they won't feel stupid. I try to be tolerant and understanding that it is difficult to learn a new language, but I find it even more annoying that there are those who gets angry that we can't speak Spanish.

I completely agree with you!!!!!!! Especially on the phone when it says for english push 1 ... wtf ???
9 :
They dont learn because they want to insult the English speaking population.

I'm in the construction business and I have found that many of the hispanics that work here know more english than they let on. Example, If I show up on a job and they don't know me they will act as though they haven't a clue what I want. One of them will usually come forward and pretend to speak broken english until he realizes I'm not there to complain about the work then it seems like a switch was thrown and they rattle on like Bill Clinton at an African-American family reunion. They also speak american money fluently.FLUENTLY!!!!

Because most of them live in communities where there are alot of bilingual residents so they feel like they dont need it. Have in mind though, since they come as adults its much harder for them. But yes, they should at least try. My mom and dad are.

From what I've read by people who had studied, and learned to speak 3 or more languages, they claim English was the most difficult language to learn. We have synonyms and antonyms; words like "to, two, too," or "witch & which" which sound identical, but are spelled and mean different. There's grammar and punctuation use, like "do not" = "don't" or "would not" = "wouldn't" Then, there's usage of certain words, like "kin folks" or "hush Ya'll" is only acceptable in the southeast, but not across the USA. From what I've read, other languages don't have the same complexity as the English language.

because they don't have to. Our govt and private businesses make it easy for them not to speak English.

In any society there will always be smart people who do stupid things. Many think they're being nationalistic or true to their heritage or have whatever twisted reason for NOT learning English. I'm not saying they're stupid, just that enough of them are doing stupid things. If you come to this country, legally or illegally, and you don't learn English, you're an idiot

It's called being lazy.Besides why learn it when tons of business and products have everything in English and Spanish. They are being catered to by the government and big business.
16 :
Because they don't want to learn English, they expect to be catered too. They have no loyalty to this country, they want to destroy it.

Like he said. they'd rather us learn Spanish and they do understand after awhile and won't tell us and be laughing the whole time! They think they are Special........ now isn't that special. I tried learning Spanish when I was stupid and naive. When I discovered they were playing me! I'm not the immigrant they are! and don't give me that we all are immigrants....I have Chocatow in me etc! Viva El United States of America~ Give me my American Flag~ and keep the stinkin' Mexican one in Mexico!

some how we just offer them PRESS1 TO CONTINUE... and think we did right by them. Stop the dual mode and you will see some of the immigration problem be alleviated. Require fluent English as part of residence unless individually sponsor by a congressman and you will see DC solve the problem ASAP

My step-dad has been here (from Mexico) for 30 years and still cannot speak English. They don't feel the need to learn it because we cater to them by learning their language.

Maybe, but I worked with many illegals for years and most of them made no effort to learn even the slightest bit of English. But most immigrants are getting away with not learning the language because their employers don't require it.
