What tips would be useful to a foreigner coming to live in America for a bit?
I will be hosting a high school boy from Japan for a few months. Some friends of mine told me i should come up with some tips on how to live and "fit in" in America for the time. Any suggestions are helpful

People think exchange students are cool. I wouldn't worry about it! When I was in high school, they always had tons of friends. Everyone was interested in them! (And it wasn't too long ago that I was in HS ;) Like 6, 7 years)

If he speaks english and stuff( sure he does) the best way would probably be for him to just hang out with you and your friends/family whenever possible. You really can't teach someone to adopt a culture.

He will not fit in, so no need to try. you do, however, want to warn him about the familiar and common gags kids pull so he won't be embarrased. for example, the kids at our high school always try to sell elevator tickets to the new kids - it is a one floor school, so obviously no elevator! Do expect him to be VERY polite and respectful. The Japanese respect their elders immensely. you will have to teach him how to ease up on that, just a little. research online so you know a little about his culture before he gets here. also, invest in a rice cooker. many asians own them and they are as common to them as toasters are to us. Do give him opportunities to see a lot of our culture, but do also try to locate an asian market in your area. From time to time he may want "comfort food" that he is familiar with.
