How do I gain a dual citizen ship if I currently live in America and want one in Canada

How do I gain a dual citizen ship if I currently live in America and want one in Canada?
I've been wanting to move to Canada for sometime after I graduated high school, but at the same time, I wanted to be able to move back to the US if I needed/wanted to, but am really confused on how dual citizenship processes work!

First off,you dont need to be a citizen to be able to live there.Second, you will first need to have a permanent residency card (Green card) which you could obtain if you have a Canadian spouse or Canadian siblings/parent.It's not that easy.I would suggest you get a student visa or a visitors pass.

Usually you live and work in the named country for a number of years then apply for citizenship

First, you need to obtain immigrant visa, Canada green card. Then maintain according to Canada Immigration law to be eligible to apply for citizenship. Then you go to interview and take test and if it is approved, you become Canadian. However, there is chance you may lose US Citizenship if you obtain another country's citizenship through naturalization according to US Citizenship law. If not, you still have to file Income Tax as long as you are US Citizen. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/become-eligibility.asp http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/index.asp http://travel.state.gov/law/citizenship/citizenship_778.html

Strictly speaking, there is no such thing as dual citizenship. You just have citizenship of two countries at the same time. No country can make laws for any other country, so the most any country can do is regulate its own citizenship, and permit or not permit its citizens to be citizens elsewhere at the same time. The concept is simply called dual citizenship for short. If you are admitted to Canada to live and work and get permanent residence status there, then after three years living there you can apply for Canadian citizenship by naturalisation. Then you are a Canadian citizen, and as both Canada and the USA permit their citizens to have other citizenships at the same time, you remain a US citizen as well. At that point, Canada treats you as Canadian without reference to the fact that you are a US citizen, and the USA treats you as a US citizen without reference to the fact that you are Canadian. One little twist to this - US law requires US citizens to enter or leave the USA on their US passport, so if you get a Canadian passport, never show it to US immigration officials. Canada doesn't have the same rule.

The USA does not recognize dual citizenship. If you become a citizen of another country while you are an American citizen, you lose your privilege to be an American citizen. That's how it should be. What if the other country went to war with the USA, who would your allegiance be with?
