How can vegetarians in America live with themselves knowing kids are starving in other countries?
Some kids would literally give a limb for something to eat, and us stuck up Americans turn it down to just eat vegetables... What has come of us? (former vegetarian)

I live moderately content with myself. While you eat meat which comes from an industry that is breeding billions of animals and feeding pounds and pounds and pounds of plants to feed those animals I am just strictly eating plants. If everyone became a vegetarian there would be a lot more food to go around. I'd prefer that the food that is going to that chicken you are going to eat, goes to a starving kid in another country. haha. can't wait to see the answers to this one :p good luck. and to the comment below - when does eating meat make you overfed? i don't understand the logic of vegetarians/vegans.. you act like you are so above the rest of the population.

Think for a moment on what your saying. vegetarians don't eat any meat in any way so there's more food for those who do eat meat which I would point out the starving kids are not vegetarians and could have more possible chance to eat if we don't eat meat. Just doing the math

How can meat-eaters in America live with themselves knowing that a developing nation clear-cut a rain forest to grow soy, then had to ship all that food to America so that cows could eat it, and then overfed Americans eat the cows. Maybe they wouldn't be starving if they could keep some food for people.
5 :
Wouldn't that mean that there's more meat for the rest of those starving children? Plus figure in the amount of grains and land needed to feed meat-animals... ...just get over yourself, dude. Former vegetarian, now meat eater, who has no problems or issues at all with vegetarians
6 :
In think were luck to have that option, its horrible that they dont have food but us not eating meat has nothing to do with that. What we dont eat maybe can be shipped to them??? I bet ya there are organizations that do that....

hahahahaha, I'm sorry, but this is just getting ridiculous. Seriously, these are two completely unrelated subjects. If you want to look at it in the sarcastic way that you are. I would gladly give a starving child all of the meat that I don't eat, since I don't really save any animals being a vegetarian anyways, right. The meat industry is such a strong supporter of starving children. I'm sure there are huge shipments of meat going to third world countries right now...come on. You can't tell me you eat everything. If I made you some "crazy vegan food" i'm sure you would turn it down just the same.

First of all, congratulations on your decision to stop being vegetarian. The answer to your question is that many vegetarians don't care as much about humans as they do about animals. I have verified this through questions I have asked and reading other questions. A lot of them won't admit it but some will. I think that it's very sad when a person cares more about the well being of animals than humans.
9 :
Why don't you give this little speech to anorexics who choose to eat nothing when kids are starving. We vegetarians are doing just fine not caring about your opinion.
10 :
Hmmm. I live with myself knowing that 1) I'm healthier than the average person. I take care of myself, and don't eat all the steroids injected into animals that are starting to cause health problems. 2) Why do you care what we eat? Eat your meat. Kill animals. I just don't see the difference between killing a cow or killing my pet dog. It's still wrong. Both have feelings. 3) I'm proud of myself. If you were a former vegetarian, you should understand it yourself. Even if you eat meat now, you're still a hypocrite. Please go bore someone else with your complaints about the world.

How can you live with yourself knowing kids in America suffer from malnutrition? Alot of kids depend on free lunches and breakfast at school to atleast get 2 decent meals a day. So before going and knocking on other countries door and handing out rice and beans. Make a doantion to a local food bank in your area and help feed a mouth near you that is desperate for food. So before laying a guilt trip on the way people eat or how they eat. Go to a local food bank and hand out food for a day and then come back and ask this question. Until then you have no room to talk about how other people live and eat.

Vegetarians do not throw away food, they simply don't eat meat. Since the production of meat uses much more in the way of resources to produce, not eating meat is actually less wasteful and more respectful of peple who do not have enough to eat.

What are you talking about? Americans consume meat like it was water. Because of this, most of the plants are fed to artificially bred cattle and animals (I say artificially because the birth of those animals is unnatural if anyone need to be clarified). Plants that could be given to other people around the world but instead is being used for our own selfishness. Americans are selfish because of this. They can't last a day without meat. So yes, really, what has come of Americans to be this selfish then?
14 :
If you had done your research you would know that a meat-based diet is the selfish thing. It takes thousands of gallons of water to produce such a little bit of meat, it can produce many more plants. A vegan or vegetarian with what they eat only uses a few acres of land per year. A meat eater uses thousands (literally) because of all the plant food that has to be fed to the meat that they will eventually eat. If everyone is America stopped eating meat world hunger would end...literally end. You can support many more people on a plant-based diet than you can with a meat diet. Not to mention the smaller carbon footprint we make and the fact that it is a move to decrease pollution and envirommental harm whih doesn't just impact the United States, but everyone in the world. Now tell me how that is something to be ashamed off.

We dont turn meat down, its not like we're wasting it, we just dont buy it. Oo, did you know that half of the crops they use to feed and fatten up cows, could feed all of the people living in third world countries, 3 times? And you say vegetarians are bad. Atleast by not eating meat, we make it obvious that we dont support that.
16 :
My diet is better for the environment, indigenous peoples, and animals. I live with myself just fine, thanks. Education is a wonderful thing.
17 :
Can meat eaters live with themselves? That should be the question. In theory global vegetarianism could ieradicatestarvation because we could be using what we feed slaved animals and give it to people. Free the animals and they can provide for themselves. How does eating meat help the needy??
18 :
It costs a hugh amount to rear animals for human consumption. Vegetables, fruit and nuts can be grown for a small % of the cost of rearing an animal. Animals consume vegetation which could feed thousands of children who are now starving. It would be relatively easy to educate people who are starving to cultivate and eat vegetables, fruit and nuts. Unfortunately animals are costly to buy and rearing them demands expertise and patience. Vegetables mature quickly and starving nations could have an abundance of food if we did not breed animals who eat what starving nations could consume. Americans and people in the UK are not "stuck up" when they turn down meat. If everyone did this the starving nations could have food in abundance.

Well, I don't live in America but I do live in the west. I'm curious as to how me not eating meat makes things worse for starving children? Your question has echos of mothers in the 1950s, urging children to 'think of the starving children' and eat every scrap on their plates. Does the fact that I dislike and never eat turnips impact on the world's starving too? By the same logic, I should not only eat them when they're offered but actively seek them out when shopping in order to do right by starving kids. See how illogical it is? Yes we are very fortunate in the west that we can pick and choose what we eat; you do it too, just as much as any vegetarian. And we should never lose sight of that. You turn down the opportunity to help the starving by spending money you could donate to charities on, for example, a computer, food and shelter for your dog(s), prescription drugs, sessions with a psychologist - all luxuries a starving child or adult does not even dream about (yes, I had a quick look at your questions). This is a very contrived question, based on skewed logic. Not as skewed as John's suggestion that veg*ns don't eat meat because they care about animals more than they care about the starving of course. I'm a lifelong political activist, for human rights not animal rights. I have campaigned hard against injustice and inequality; at the same time I'm a vegan to minimise my contribution to animal suffering. No contradiction there, and no starving child would benefit if I put bacon rather than hummus in the sandwich I am about to make.

I am not sure that I am getting totally the point that you are making. But I do believe that you are making a point about people more involved with animal welfare vs. human? If that is the case, I can assure you that all vegetarians are not of that mindset. I believe in donation of food to local food banks to meet the needs of the hungry. I have even started donating vegetarian food such as soy/almond/rice/hemp milk (depending which I can find on sale), quinoa, beans, rice, vegetables of all sorts, along with cereals that are kid friendly (marketed with the child in mind) - all organic and vegetarian/vegan. I have donated my time and effort to the local food pantry. I have opened my open many times to those in need of a place to stay - after the hurricane recently in Texas, battered women when shelters were full. This isn't a recent attitude, but one that I have had for some time - my kids grew up with people sleeping in the house that were not family but needed a place to stay. On a wider scope of the world, I have donated money, food, clothing, formula for babies to be taken to foreign countries. Even donated in helping for homes to be built. It isn't a problem from being a vegetarian or American. It is a problem of lack of concern for mankind in general.

Because the Grain used to feed animals for slaughter could be used to feed starving people in third world countries. Plus me not eating meat wont stop them starving, you wrote your a former vegetarian. I think you just couldn't handle how hard it is being one and now your trying to make excuses that eating meat again is a good thing. Stop being a moron then I'll listen to whatever BS you come up with next.
22 :
If that's what you think why were you a vegetarian in the first place? How can you live with yourself knowing that you ate a dead thing? That's disgusting. What gives us the right to eat another living creature? We're no better than they are. Humans have rights, & animals have rights. Nothing will change that. Those children don't have to eat meat! They'll be perfectly fine with a salad as long as they can have a decent meal. Meat isn't the only source of food on this earth y'know.
23 :
These are a lot of dumb answers.....just saying.

I am not American, but I fail to see how you can put guilt on someone who doesn't eat meat, for starving people. If people could help more, I can almost guarantee its the vegetarians who would feel more compassion. You want to make someone feel guilty then lobby the governments of these impoverished nations, They are the ones who keep the money and food for themselves, not the vegetarians of America.
